Full Stomach, Empty Heart: A Sermon Outline from Ruth 1, Part 2

March 16, 2021 by Allen Nelson IV Leave a Comment

Last time we looked at how Elimelech’s departure from Bethlehem to Moab revealed that he failed to, Discern the Purposes of God, Delight in the Precepts of God, and Dwell in the Presence of God. We have two final points to mention in today’s post. Elimelech’s departure from Bethlehem meant he failed to: Depend on […]

Full Stomach, Empty Heart: A Sermon Outline from Ruth 1, Part 1

March 10, 2021 by Allen Nelson IV

In this post, we’ll look at a sermon outline from the book of Ruth and focus on Elimelech’s decision to move his family to Moab. In the days when the judges ruled there was a famine in the land, and a man of Bethlehem in Judah went to sojourn in the country of Moab, he […]

The Line of the Promised One

July 3, 2018 by Allen Nelson IV

If you had never heard of the book of Ruth before and then read it for yourself one day, you’d be forced to say it ends rather surprisingly. I’m not talking about the marriage of Ruth and Boaz, although that’s surprising enough in itself. I’m talking about how the book actually ends: with a genealogy […]

8 Marriage Principles from Ruth 3:10-18 – Part 3

May 14, 2018 by Allen Nelson IV

In Ruth 2, Ruth spends a day of hard labor gleaning in the field of Boaz to provide for her and Naomi. Charles Spurgeon once preached a whole sermon on Ruth 2:15 and the importance of spiritual gleaning. What we’ve been doing over the course of 3 blogposts now is gleaning from God’s Word. We’ve […]

8 Marriage Principles from Ruth 3:10–18 — Part 2

May 9, 2018 by Allen Nelson IV

As a side note, our youngest child turns one today! The year has flown by. Happy birthday to Haddon! Now back to our regularly scheduled blogging… The Word of God is truly a treasure. If we spend time in it regularly we will see that the Lord has given to us even more truth about […]

8 Marriage Principles from Ruth 3:10-18 – Part 1

May 5, 2018 by Allen Nelson IV

Not sure why the number 8 has been so special recently. I wrote a post last week about 8 Practical thoughts on Corporate Singing, and now it’s 8 Marriage Principles. Nothing magical about the number 8! It’s just how it all shook out. Our church has been going through the book of Ruth in 2018 […]

Book Review — The Doctrine on Which the Church Stands or Falls

The Doctrine on Which the Church Stands or Falls takes its title from the Reformation era conviction that justification by faith is the dividing line between the biblical gospel and man-centered efforts to earn favor with God. Matthew Barrett serves as editor and co-author with several significant theologians. In the forward, D.A. Carson writes that nothing is more important than the subject of this massive volume (15). The book is organized into four parts, grouping the chapters by looking at justification according to what the Bible itself teaches, theological perspectives on the doctrine, church history, and pastoral practice.

The Urgency of Scripture Memorization

These are just a few of the excuses I’ve heard, and I don’t buy any of them. Scripture memorization being difficult for you is all the more reason you should strive to do it! And I don’t think it’s an unnecessary or legalistic yoke to place on you, as the Scripture itself is full of references which can only be rightly interpreted as requiring memorization. How do you expect to meditate on God’s Word day and night if you don’t have it in your heart? How shall a young man keep his way pure when he encounters temptation? Jesus quoted Scripture from memory in the wilderness, let him be your example.

TAU Beginnings

On January 15, I was reminded that it has been two years since we started ThingsAbove.Us. The reminder came by way of a tiny bit of hardship where our domain name expired precisely two years after we purchased it. We got that fixed, but I wondered how many of our readers weren’t around back then. So even […]

Something to think about!

Serving Two Masters: STTA!

Something To Think About! I believe most Christians understand Christ’s teaching about serving two masters. Jesus says “No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and wealth.” (Matt 6:24 NASB) Obviously, […]

Varieties of Gifts

One thing I’ve noticed over the past several decades of watching the NFL playoffs and Super Bowls is that the teams that go to the playoffs and deepest into the playoffs have the most Pro-Bowl selections. What is striking, though is the team with the NFL rushing leaders or passing leader isn’t always the team […]
