The Drunkenness and Repentance of Brother Johnnathan Osburn

August 10, 2020 by Allen Nelson IV

I have a book I received as a gift from Plum Creek Baptist Church in Taylorsville, KY. This book tells the story of the church’s inception to its 175th anniversary in 1985. I am grateful for my brief time serving there as Youth Pastor for portions of 2008 and 2009. Included in this book are […]

The Aim of Shame

March 30, 2020 by Allen Nelson IV

I don’t buy the argument that says Americans are worse today than we were 50 years ago, 100 years ago, or even 240 years ago. Some may be baffled at such a statement given present cultural controversies over marriage and abortion, and the general disdain we seem to have as a society for the things […]

Why I Need A Church that Judges Me

July 29, 2019 by Allen Nelson IV

If you’re not a careful reader of Scripture you may have never noticed what Paul says to the church in Corinth: “For what have I to do with judging outsiders? Is it not those inside the church whom you are to judge?” 1 Corinthians 5:12 We are a society so enamored with autonomy that we […]

Distorting the Gospel by Who You Eat With?

March 12, 2018 by Allen Nelson IV

We recently finished a Bible Intensive Retreat with the brothers from Christian Communicators Worldwide. This was my 5th Intensive and one of the best I’ve attended. We spent 2 days pouring over Galatians 1–2. There was much we learned, much we sharpened one another with, and much to still chew on. But I’d like to […]

Psalm 34:15-22 – A Moment of Reflection

Before we begin the final third of Psalm 34, it seems right and good to take a step back and soak in the passage before we dissect it. The first third, verses 1-7, is about simple truths.  The second third, verses 8-14, is about instructions for godliness. Now, in the shadow of truth and instruction […]

Psalm 34:1-3: “Bless the Lord!”

Introduction: Toward the end of Book 1 of the Psalms lies Psalm 34; an acrostic Psalm of David written during the time David feigned madness before the Canaanite king Achish. This was during his flight from Saul. David left his dearest friend Jonathan, and his father and brothers, to flee his homeland. He was the […]

When God Turns His Back On You…

Here is a sincere question from a person who is struggling with her faith: “Why does it seem like when people need God the most he turns his back on them?” Here is my answer to that question: When God Turned Away Let me preface it by saying it’s gonna seem like a non-answer, but […]

Psalm 119:73-76 — Sovereign Creator

The most fondly looked upon saints in history were built up in the faith (Jude 1:20) through their own suffering which led to earnest prayer. And they, like the faithful ones of Hebrews 11, looked forward to God’s promise to his servant to endure. It is the hope of Heaven that allows weak vessels to remain faithful during suffering. It is the promise that God will not lose any of His sheep that provides the strength to do good in the midst of evil. And it is the comfort we find in God’s steadfast love toward us that motivates us to be still and know that He is God when the only hope we have is that he will do all that He has promised, even when all earthly evidence appears to the contrary.

Should Small Churches Unite?

I’m working on my master’s thesis with Grace Bible Theological Seminary and came across some things I thought our readers might find interesting. In 1689 the General Assembly of Particular Baptist Churches convened. One of the things the General Assembly did was give practical suggestions for cooperation among churches. Consider, for example, this question asked […]
