I can guess what you might be thinking with a post titled “Trinitarian Prayer.” You might think I’m going to lay out a plan for praying to every person of the blessed trinity. But that is not what this post is about. Nor is this post meant to be instructive so much as I hope it is devotional and encouraging.

I realize that Christians pray differently. I’ve heard people speaking directly to Jesus in their prayers. I’ve heard people begin with “Our Father” only to eventually say things like “Thank you, Jesus.” Even recently a brother told me he prays to all three persons.

Personally, I pray to the Father, in the name of Jesus, and in the Holy Spirit. (John 16:23-24;Jude 20). But, as I said, that is not what this post is about. I want to encourage you, dear Christian, by the work of the trinity in their intercession for you.

The Spirit Intercedes

The Holy Spirit intercedes on behalf of those whom He has sealed for redemption, even praying for us what we cannot pray ourselves. Be encouraged.

Romans 8:26 Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words. 27And he who searches hearts knows what is the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints according to the will of God.

Jesus Interceded

Jesus also prayed for you and for me. Come and see! (emphasis mine)

John 17 18 As you sent me into the world, so I have sent them into the world. 19 And for their sake I consecrate myself, that they also may be sanctified in truth. 20 “I do not ask for these only, but also for those who will believe in me through their word24 Father, I desire that they also, whom you have given me, may be with me where I am, to see my glory that you have given me because you loved me before the foundation of the world.

Robert Murray M’Cheyne wrote “If I could hear Christ praying for me in the next room, I would not fear a million enemies. Yet distance makes no difference. He is praying for me.”

Let us remember that truth and meditate upon scriptures such as Hebrews 7:25 for our joy in the affliction of this life.

The Father Provided the Intercession

It was the Father who sent the Son (1 John 4:14) and the Father who sent/sends the Holy Spirit.

John 14 16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever, 17 even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, for he dwells with you and will be in you. 26 But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you. 27 Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid.

Do Not Be Troubled in Heart

Let not your hearts be troubled, dear saint of God. For the Father elected you, the Son paid your debt and the Spirit resurrected you and indwells you. The God of the universe has set His love upon you and even so, the whole trinity works in unity to bring you to perfection through intercession on your behalf. Be of good cheer as you consider this glorious truth!
