Placebo Prayers

September 11, 2019 by Michael Coughlin

Last weekend, we had 6 men preaching God’s Word in our group. We split into two groups of 3 and separated physically. This allows us to always have 2 men preaching the mystery of the gospel. So we were able to achieve nearly 5 hours of street preaching in 2.5 hours, with each man carrying no more than about an hour of the load. But this week, I was the only preacher, and I was committed to filling the time. How God enabled that to happen is truly remarkable!

Psalm 34:16 – God Has Chosen Sides

Psalm 34 has a definite structure. The first third of the Psalm is David recounting God’s faithfulness. He rehearses it again and again: God answered him, God heard him, God encamps around him, and on and on it goes. There’s a give and take, David exalts God and God takes care of David. The second […]

God-Breathed: A Response to Rachel Held Evans’s View of Scripture – Part 6

In the last post on Rachel Held Evans’s (RHE from now on) new book Inspired: Slaying Giants, Walking on Water, and Loving the Bible Again we talked about her view of the Old Testament. Today, we’ll discuss her view of the New Testament. All totaled this project has been several hours of work. Between reading the book and […]

No More Holding Back — Kat Armstrong (book review, part 1)

As Kat Armstrong opens No More Holding Back: Emboldening Women to Move Past Barriers, See Their Worth, and Serve God Everywhere (Thomas Nelson, July 2019), she tells a story of an incident. In the middle of a class at Dallas Seminary, she lamented to her professor, “I’m scared to learn too much about Jesus because I […]

Christians and Privilege

The idea of one needing to check his privilege first came across my eyes and ears a few years back. I remember thinking, quite naively in hindsight, that this was just a few college students who are professionally and perpetually outraged being coached by some untenured professor trying to make a name for herself. “Such […]

Psalm 34:19-22 He Keeps All His Bones

In understanding Psalm 34:18, we came to understand that it is within the crisis that God is present. What this means is that God often allows His faithful to suffer and to face various trials. This is exactly what verse 19 tells us: [19] Many are the afflictions of the righteous, But the LORD delivers him […]

5 People Not to Be During Someone Else’s Trial

We recently began a journey through the book of James at Perryville Second Baptist. As I studied through James 1:2-12, I thought about some of the unhelpful people I’ve encountered during a personal trial, or a trial that someone else was going through. In today’s post, I’d like to caution us to not be one […]
