Christ’s Preserving Prayers: The Reason for Our Perseverance

April 17, 2019 by George Alvarado

From the world’s perspective, there isn’t any beneficial reason to continue in the faith. I mean, why would anyone want to swim against the constantly swelling tide of persecution knowing full well it may cost us our friends, family, jobs, and yes, perhaps our very life? And even in our own hearts, how often in […]

Inspired to Conspire

2020 is already the oddest and most surprising year of my life. Personally, it’s been filled with news and events I was not expecting (most of which was good) and then obviously the onset of SARS-CoV-2 and the ensuing global reaction have truly been historic regardless of what happens. One of the surprising side effects […]

Reformation Day – Luther and the 95 Theses

October 31st, 2019 marks the 502nd anniversary of the Protestant Reformation. As confessional protestants, many of us recognize the Reformation as a recovery of the gospel. Here is a brief look at who and what sparked the Reformation and why it matters. Who was Martin Luther? Martin Luther was born in 1483 to a German […]

Walking with God — Part 4

Currently, I am preaching through Genesis 1–11 at Perryville Second Baptist Church. In our 33rd week through the series (no, I am not recommending everyone go that slow!) we came upon the curious case of Enoch in Genesis 5:22–24. This series of posts (see part 1 here) fleshes out some thoughts on Enoch’s walk with […]

Made by SA007, a bomb suitcase. It is a devious puzzle, which you have to solve by defusing the "bomb" within a 5 minute time-window. After that, it will go off and "explode". Various triggers and switches will set it off prematurely when incorrectly handled. You are allowed to use anything found inside the case plus basic lock-picking tools. It'll beep ominously and also more frequently as the countdown approaches zero and tension rises. It is impossible to get it right on the first try and you will probably hear lots of explosions.

1 Timothy 2:12 Revisited — The Authority Word Problem

In How to Use a “For” Clause: 1 Timothy 2:12 and Egalitarianism, I explained how the two phrases in verses 13 and 14 should guide our understanding of how Paul uses the verb “do not permit” in verse 12. More recently, I came across Defusing the 1 Timothy 2:12 Bomb, an argument that “there are too […]

2019 Bible Reading

As one year ends and a new one begins, we are afforded with an opportunity to assess our lives and consider areas in which we want to improve. Certainly this can be “overdone” in terms of morbid introspections, but, frankly, this usually isn’t the way we falter. Rather, we too often continue on from year […]
