Counseling Awakened Sinners and Recent Converts

July 7, 2020 by Allen Nelson IV

I had the privilege recently of reading William Buell Sprague’s 1832 book* Lectures on Revivals of Religion. This work is a series of 9 lectures that Dr. Sprague gives defending the biblical warrant for revival and instructing churches on how to promote true revival and guard against counterfeits. This post focuses on lectures 6 and 7. […]

Satan’s Strategies for Temptation – Part 2

Last time, we saw that Satan tempts us in doubting God’s Word and downplaying the consequences to sin. In this post, we will look at 2 final strategies Satan uses for temptation in Genesis 3:1–5. Distorting God’s Character Essentially Satan has targeted the goodness of God in Genesis 3:4–5. He has called God a liar. […]

The Overwhelming, Never-ending, Reckoning Wrath of God

God’s providence was impeccable as I had just so “happened” to be home when I heard the knock at the door. I had just finished my lunch but hadn’t gone back to the office when I opened the door to see an older husband and wife standing there with warm smiles. They were Jehovah Witnesses. […]

F1 Team Orders Controversy Raises Ethical Questions

Setting the Stage Formula 1 traditionally has consisted of a group of two-car teams. Both cars of a team must run substantially the same color design. Since there are ten teams, there are ten pairs of cars, and each pair looks almost exactly alike except for small elements that distinguish the cars from each other, […]

Children’s Book Review — The Woman Who Helped A Reformer

The Woman Who Helped A Reformer is a short depiction of the life of Katharina Luther, the wife of the well-known reformer, Martin Luther. The work that she did to help her husband be free to preach and teach the Word of God during a pivotal time in church history is shown with wonderful imagery. Although the book is very well-written and captures little one’s attention, it is the illustrations that put the entire story together. Thoughtful parents will take time to ask their children questions like “How many things is Mrs. Luther carrying on this page? and “What is that in her hand?” in order to engage young readers’ attention.

Looking Back: Celebration of Discipline by Richard Foster, part 1

Perhaps you’ve never heard of the term “spiritual formation,” let alone Richard Foster or his foundational work, Celebration of Discipline: The Path to Spiritual Growth. The writings of two authors, Richard Foster and Dallas Willard, are the primary drivers of the movement. Searching the Internet for “spiritual formation” is prone to cause more confusion than understanding. Many resources […]

Destroyed for Lack of Knowledge

“My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge.” – Hosea 4:6 Knowledge is power, so they say. When it comes to knowing the character of God, the lack of knowledge is detrimental. Contextually, the weight of this verse lies on the spiritual leaders of God’s people. What an absolute travesty that God’s own people would […]
