Psalm 37 in the LSB vs. NASB 1995

February 12, 2021 by Garrett O’Hara 2 Comments

The LSB website recently posted its translation of Psalm 37. I’ve typed it out here and marked differences with its NASB 1995 basis.

LSB NASB 1995
1 Do not fret because of evildoers,
Be not envious toward doers of unrighteousness.
Do not fret because of evildoers,
Be not envious toward wrongdoers.
2 For they will wither quickly like the grass
And fade like the green herb.
For they will wither quickly like the grass
And fade like the green herb.
3 Trust in Yahweh and do good;
Dwell in the land and cultivate faithfulness.
Trust in the Lord and do good;
Dwell in the land and cultivate faithfulness
4 Delight yourself in Yahweh;
And He will give you the desires of your heart.
Delight yourself in the Lord;
And He will give you the desires of your heart.
5 Commit your way to Yahweh,
Trust | in Him, and He will do it.
Commit your way to the Lord,
Trust also in Him, and He will do it.
6 He will bring forth your righteousness as the light
And your judgment as the noonday.
He will bring forth your righteousness as the light
And your judgment as the noonday.
7 Be still in Yahweh and wait patiently for Him;
Do not fret because of him who prospers in his way,
Because of the man who carries out schemes of wickedness.
Rest in the Lord and wait patiently for Him;
Do not fret because of him who prospers in his way,
Because of the man who carries out wicked schemes.
8 Cease from anger and forsake wrath;
Do not fret, it leads only to evildoing.
Cease from anger and forsake wrath;
Do not fret; it leads only to evildoing.
9 For evildoers will be cut off,
But those who hope for Yahweh, they will inherit the land.
For evildoers will be cut off,
But those who wait for the Lord, they will inherit the land.
10 Yet a little while and the wicked man will be no more;
| You will look carefully at his place, and he will not be there.
Yet a little while and the wicked man will be no more;
And you will look carefully for his place and he will not be there.
11 But the lowly will inherit the land
And will delight themselves in abundant peace.
But the humble will inherit the land
And will delight themselves in abundant prosperity.
12 The wicked schemes against the righteous
And gnashes at him with his teeth
The wicked plots against the righteous
And gnashes at him with his teeth.
13 The Lord laughs at him
For He sees that his day is coming.
The Lord laughs at him,
For He sees | his day is coming.
14 The wicked have drawn the sword and bent their bow
To cast down the afflicted and the needy,
To slay those who are upright in conduct.
The wicked have drawn the sword and bent their bow
To cast down the afflicted and the needy,
To slay those who are upright in conduct.
15 Their sword will enter their own heart,
And their bows will be broken.
Their sword will enter their own heart,
And their bows will be broken.
16 Better is the little of the righteous
Than the abundance of many wicked.
Better is the little of the righteous
Than the abundance of many wicked.
17 For the arms of the wicked will be broken,
But Yahweh sustains the righteous.
For the arms of the wicked will be broken,
But the Lord sustains the righteous.
18 Yahweh knows the days of the blameless,
And their inheritance will be forever.
The Lord knows the days of the blameless,
And their inheritance will be forever.
19 They will not be ashamed in the time of evil,
And in the days of famine they will be satisfied.
They will not be ashamed in the time of evil,
And in the days of famine they will have abundance.
20 But the wicked will perish;
And the enemies of Yahweh will be like the glory of the pastures,
They vanish—in smoke they vanish away.
But the wicked will perish;
And the enemies of the Lord will be like the glory of the pastures,
They vanish — like smoke they vanish away.
21 The wicked borrows and does not pay back,
But the righteous is gracious and gives.
The wicked borrows and does not pay back,
But the righteous is gracious and gives.
22 For those blessed by Him will inherit the land,
But those cursed by Him will be cut off.
For those blessed by Him will inherit the land,
But those cursed by Him will be cut off.
23 The footsteps of a man are established by Yahweh,
And He delights in his way.
The steps of a man are established by the Lord,
And He delights in his way.
24 When he falls, he will not be hurled headlong,
Because Yahweh is the One who sustains his hand.
When he falls, he will not be hurled headlong,
Because the Lord is the One who holds his hand.
25 I was young and now I am old,
Yet I have not seen the righteous forsaken
Or his seed begging bread.
I have been young and now I am old,
Yet I have not seen the righteous forsaken
Or his descendants begging bread.
26 All day long he is gracious and lends,
And his seed is a blessing.
All day long he is gracious and lends,
And his descendants are a blessing.
27 Depart from evil and do good,
So you will dwell forever.
Depart from evil and do good,
So you will abide forever.
28 For Yahweh loves justice
And will not forsake His holy ones;
They are kept forever,
But the seed of the wicked will be cut off.
For the Lord loves justice
And does not forsake his godly ones;
They are preserved forever,
But the descendants of the wicked will be cut off.
29 The righteous will inherit the land
And dwell in it forever.
The righteous will inherit the land
And dwell in it forever.
30 The mouth of the righteous utters wisdom,
And his tongue speaks justice.
The mouth of the righteous utters wisdom,
And his tongue speaks justice.
31 The law of His God is in his heart;
His steps do not slip.
The law of His God is in his heart;
His steps do not slip.
32 The wicked spies upon the righteous
And seeks to put him to death.
The wicked spies upon the righteous
And seeks to kill him.
33 Yahweh will not forsake him in his hand;
He will not condemn him when he is judged.
The Lord will not leave him in his hand
Or let him be condemned when he is judged.
34 Hope for Yahweh and keep His way,
And He will exalt you to inherit the land;
When the wicked are cut off, you will see it.
Wait for the Lord and keep His way,
And He will exalt you to inherit the land;
When the wicked are cut off, you will see it.
35 I have seen a wicked, ruthless man
Spreading himself like a luxuriant tree in its native soil.
I have seen a wicked, violent man
Spreading himself like a luxuriant tree in its native soil.
36 Then he passed away, and behold, he was no more;
I sought for him, but he could not be found.
Then he passed away, and lo, he was no more;
I sought for him, but he could not be found.
37 Observe the blameless man, and behold the upright;
For the man of peace will have a posterity.
Mark the blameless man, and behold the upright;
For the man of peace will have a posterity.
38 But transgressors will be altogether destroyed;
The posterity of the wicked will be cut off.
But transgressors will be altogether destroyed;
The posterity of the wicked will be cut off.
39 But the salvation of the righteous is from Yahweh;
He is their strength in time of distress.
But the salvation of the righteous is from the Lord;
He is their strength in time of trouble.
40 Yahweh helps them and protects them;
He protects them from the wicked and saves them,
Because they take refuge in Him.
The Lord helps them and delivers them;
He delivers them from the wicked and saves them,
Because they take refuge in Him.

Garrett O’Hara

Garrett appears to have originated the term, but not the theology, "dispybapticalvinistic-expialidocious." He is a husband, a father of four children, a U.S. Navy veteran, a semi-truck driver, and a second grade Sunday school teacher. He also holds a Th.M. in New Testament paid for mostly by the Post-9/11 GI Bill (don't tell Mikey Weinstein).

    I must say, I’m somewhat disappointed. I had hoped for a t least some brief commentary on the differences – particularly in the translational decision to use Yahweh vs the Lord.

      Hi Michael. I basically was short on time to comment on particular differences, but I’ll have more concerning Psalm 46 later this week, and I’ll see if coming back to examine Psalm 37 more is needed. I don’t have much to add to what the LSB folks have already said concerning YHWH vs. LORD, and it’s not an issue that’s particular to Psalm 37.

Psalm 34:17-18 – He is Near the Brokenhearted

It never ceases to astonish me how similar suffering is from person to person, even if they are suffering for different reasons. The thing I hear most often with suffering believers is “I pray, but does God even hear me?” Our verses from Psalm 34 today put that issue to rest for each and every […]

Go, Therefore: Praying Before Meals

“Go, Therefore” posts are quick tips to help Christians live lives of evangelism. At a Restaurant When you go to a restaurant to eat and pray publicly, folks around you will notice. Now this isn’t necessarily evangelism, but when we pray publicly, it does remind people about God. Don’t pray “just to be seen by others” […]

The short, cold, unflinching answer to the question posed in the title of this post is: whatever the market allows, but my fellow laborers at Things Above Us demand I write more than a dozen or so words. Psalm 119:161-164— Do You Hate Falsehood?

Christianity is thought of by many as the “religion of niceness.” Whoever came up with that idea knows very little of the scripture. Yes, Christians are called to be kind and should be known by their kindness and meekness. But too often we mistake kindness for fake-virtues like “never disagreeing with anyone,” and “never hating anything or anyone.” But as David speaks here, so does the Christ, “I hate and abhor falsehood.” Jesus Christ is the Truth and falsehood is a lie. Thus it is fitting that we should hate the opposite (falsehood) of that which we love (Christ). God chooses more than one word here to denote His holy hatred for lying. God personally hates lying and morally detests it.

Little Women — Movie Review

Little Women, a modern adaptation of the classic Louisa May Alcott story opens in theaters, Friday, September 28. In the history of the world, […]

God’s Hatred of Sin and the Coming Judgment

Since God is unchangeably holy, His hatred of sin has not changed. God will always have an intense hatred for sin. One day, Christ will return to judge the nations, and those who have not bowed the knee to the Lord of hosts will suffer His great wrath. Revelation 14:19–20 says, So the angel swung […]
